Hello!  Welcome to Hair Salons Detroit.

I realize that is somewhat of an odd name for a website, but there’s a reason for choosing this particular combination of words.

You see, whenever someone in the Detroit metropolitan area needs their hair styled, trimmed, permed, colored, treatments or just a little taken off the top, there’s a pretty good chance that you’ll log on to your computer and type in the phrase: Hair Salons Detroit…or maybe Detroit Hair Salons in order to find the right salon to handle your needs.

Or, have you ever had a bad experience at a hair salon?  Either the hair stylist made a terrible mistake, or just didn’t listen to what you wanted?  Maybe you went in for some simple highlights and lowlights, but walked out looking like Ziggy Stardust (for you David Bowie fans)?

If either of these sound familiar, then this site is for you!

I wanted you to find my website, Hair Salons Detroit, because unlike all the other sites that may pop up in your search, I do not own my own hair salon (or beauty salon), nor am I a hair stylist.

I’m actually an impartial consumer, who has had some pretty bad experiences with hair salons and hairdressers over the years.  This has motivated me to create this site to help you find the right hair salons in Detroit.  Also, this is not a site about tanning salons or nail salons.  We are focused on finding the best, most reliable hair salons in Detroit and the surrounding areas.

Now, I’m not going to bash any salons out there, but I will make solid recommendations on a few amazing hair salons in Detroit (and surrounding areas) that you can trust to take excellent care of you.  So keep visiting Hair Salons Detroit on a regular basis for the local hair salons we’ll be spotlighting.

In addition to all that, I’ll also be sharing some horrible experiences my family and I’ve had, with hairdressers in the past.  This should give you enough information to confidently decide on the right hair salon for you.  Think about it, if a salon owner has hacks charging hundreds of dollars for a hair coloring and straightening, for example, that is a direct reflection on the hair salon itself.

Good hair has the power to instantly transform your mood; making you feel prettier and more confident. And getting pampered by a professional in a posh salon only increases those positive feelings.  Ever have your hair done at Mario Tricoci’s?

That said, let me share one unfortunate experience with you real quick…

A few years back, my wife went to a local salon (that was recommended by a friend) to get her hair highlighted and colored. She was very excited and had been looking forward to this for quite some time. After the highlights were done and stylist was rinsing her hair, she put in some ‘product’ to neutralize the blonde.

This was so painful.  My wife thought her scalp was on fire…and this was supposed to be a relaxing experience, right?

As her hair was being blow dried, my wife noticed something was not right.  The hairdresser had put in some brown coloring to match her roots, that unfortunately was way too dark. Also, the blonde highlights were very obvious.  In my wife’s words, “she looked like a brown skunk”.

Needless to say, she was not happy. So she went back to the salon the next day and had to make an even longer appointment to have the skunk problem fixed.  When it was over, my wife was out almost $300 and also found out that her scalp had been damaged.

Since this incident, the beauty salon has changed ownership a few times and is now closed.

Hopefully, after spending a few minutes at my site, Hair Salons Detroit, you’ll know who can trust for your hair styling needs.

You always hear about the hair salon horror stories, but really ladies, there are some really great stylists out there.   It’s just a matter of finding the right one.   I found the right one for me at a hair salon in Detroit.

Here’s my story.

I met a girlfriend for coffee one day.  In the weeks leading up to this, she had been having trouble with her hair literally breaking in her hands and the color just wasn’t lasting.  She is a beautiful girl, but this day, she walked in commanding the room and looking absolutely radiant.  Quite often, when a woman is glowing, there’s a man involved.  The man who deserved the credit in this case was her new stylist, we’ll call him Scott.

Scott had read her hair just perfectly.  He didn’t just work to cover up someone else’s mistake, rather, he  identified the root of her problems and put together a short and long term plan to get her hair healthy and looking great again.  She shared with me her visit to his salon and Scott’s amazing training and experience.  Before we left the restaurant, I had my appointment booked.

I am a simple girl with a very simple cut:  Long blonde hair with bangs.  This style has been with me for years;  Okay, decades.  I have had a few different stylists at various well-known hair salons in Detroit.  Each hair salon was cool and trendy and each stylist had a great personality and years of experience.  I really liked them all, yet, I had never left the hair salon feeling lighter, fresher or more beautiful.

Isn’t that the point of trusting yourself and your hair to the professionals?  I was prepared to get the trademark locks cutoff and surrender myself to “Scott.”

My appointment arrived.  The receptionist greeted me with a smock and fresh lemon water.  Scott played with my hair while he learned a little about me.  I told him about my historical style and that I was ready for him to change my tendrils, even cut them all off. He just smiled and put me at ease.

A cute “boy-toy” shampooed and gave me the most amazing head and shoulder massage.  On its own, I would have paid for this luxury.  Awesome music jammed on the speakers and Fashion Week was on the huge flat screens around the salon.  I felt like I had been welcomed into a trendy VIP New York nightclub.

But, none of this compared to my time with Scott.   He pulled out his razors, which albeit scared me, and in literally just a few minutes, I was a new person.  My hair was still long with bangs, yet I looked completely different.  The angles he added around my face framed my jaw line perfectly.  The bangs were the perfect length, shape and thickness.  Even with my hair still wet, my face and eyes looked brighter.

I walked out of that hair salon with a confidence and energy that lasted for months.  Now, I did have to pay a little more than I was accustomed to, but Scott’s talents and the way I feel every time I get out of his chair totally support and justify the cost.

When you have an experience such as this, the energy you walk away with lasts for weeks.  There’s nothing better than feeling good about yourself…except for the stream of compliments about how great you look.  But it’s true:  That great confidence flows through you to everything you do at work, home and out on the town.  Find the right stylist for you.

Don’t settle for good enough, you deserve the best.  Hair Salons Detroit is dedicated to educating its readers and spot lighting the best hair salons in Detroit and surrounding areas.

I’ve included a short video of an unfortunate experience this lady had at a hair salon.  She grew her hair for 9 months so she could get a particular hair style.  But instead, she got this….

Have you ever had the shocking experience of having to find a new hair stylist?  If not, consider yourself lucky.  Because that day will come.

I recall when my stylist of 5 years informed me that she wanted a career change, so she was going back to school for a business degree.  How could she do this to me?  Once the initial shock wore off, I was left with the daunting task of finding a new stylist.  But where do I start?

Before I knew it, it was time for another haircut and I had not yet found another stylist.  So I called the same salon I had been going for the last 5 years and spoke with the salon owner.  I asked who she recommends and scheduled an appointment with her.

Not only did she do a fine job, she changed my look completely and did much better than the already terrific job her predicessor had been doing with my hair.  I was very pleasantly surprised and I remained a client of that salon for the next 9 years.

So was it luck that I just happened to stumble upon this amazing stylist who was just waiting for a new client?  I don’t think so.  Throughout those 9 years, my stylists changed a few times, but the quality of service and workmanship did not.  This was because I went to an excellent hair salon with top-of-the-line staff training and mentoring.

The secret is finding the right hair salon that’s important, not so much the stylist.

So how do you find the right salon?

The most effective way is to screen the salon before making an appointment.  Ask questions like: do you have an internship or apprentice program for training new stylists? How often do they have inservice education for the styists (besides product education)?  Do they attend any beauty shows?  How many stylists attend an advanced academy with Toni & Guy, American Crew, Paul Mitchell, etc.?  Do they compete in any national or state level hair cutting competitions?

Trips to the salon should be fun and you should leave happy. You’re paying these hair stylists to basically make you feel beautiful, and in the end it is a service industry.

You don’t have to be a victim.  You can take a proactive approach and avoid a bad experience with a new hair salon.  Below is an article I found that has some pretty good suggestions so you can avoid a hair salon nightmare:

How To Avoid A Hair Salon Nightmare
By Raymond Watte

We have all had one of those hair salon “nightmares,” unfortunately. After paying a lot of money to FINALLY get our hair done somewhere that we think will do a good job, we leave the place embarrassed. We can’t wait to go home, shampoo, and redo it ourselves. That shouldn’t happen, particularly from an establishment with a good reputation. To keep it from ever happening again, there are a number of steps toward choosing a salon with an excellent product and great service.

Choosing the right salon can SEEM daunting. There seems to be one on every corner! So many that narrowing down the right one can seem impossible. But avoiding the wrong choice, and ending up with a terrible hair cut that is a waste of time and money, is important enough to make the search all the more important.

One thing that you can do is to make sure you begin your search with a good referral. When you start by getting a good review, you can ensure that you will be working with a business that has a good reputation and tends to give good service. That will at least be a step in the right direction.

But because everyone’s hair is different, it is important that you make sure your referral is right for you. There could be two salons or stylists that both do perfectly good work, but unless they know your particular hair type or style, they won’t be able to give you the look that you want. So you need to make sure that they know your hair style. That is one reason that you should start by asking someone that has your particular hair type where they go to get a good hair cut.

Maybe you have long, straight hair, or need to have someone who knows how to give you your own particular look. So if you see someone who seems to be getting the cut or style you are looking for, make sure you ask where they went. Don’t be shy – no one minds getting a compliment about their hair cut. And it could be your only chance for a referral that’s right for you.

In addition, there are a few more things that you can do to make sure you find a hair salon you will like. First, you can schedule a consultation. That way, you can hear for yourself what the hair stylist has in mind for your hair before you even waste a single bit of time or money. If you don’t like what the stylist has to say, you needn’t schedule the appointment at all. While you are there, a good bet will be to check out a portfolio of a particular stylist’s work. That is a super easy way to communicate about the particular hair cut or style you are looking for, and at the same time make sure that a stylist is on your same page.

In addition, there can be some red flags to look out for that will warn you that a hair salon will not be a good bet. One of them will be any sort of dirt, shoddy equipment, or bad cleaning job. If there are dirty and unkempt workstations, or if they fail to change hair snips between clients, watch out. A place with hygiene problems will not be somewhere that you want to get your hair done.

Another is a lack of customer service or professionalism. You can see right away if a salon doesn’t have pride in their work, and it will be a tipoff that you won’t have a good experience. If you are in the waiting room for long periods without being acknowledged or if you don’t get a return phone call, what are the chances that the salon is going to give you the personal treatment that you will need for a great look?

The good news is, however, that even if you do run into a bad or even a ‘nightmare’ experience at a salon, it won’t be the end of the world. The great thing about hair is that it keeps growing and you always have a chance to start again with another stylist and another look. But hopefully if you take the time to choose wisely in the first place, you can start looking great as soon as possible!
